Getting a grip: 'Broken' Matt Hardy in WWE; Bullet Club attempting indie super-show

Each week, Sporting News runs down the biggest stories in the world of professional wrestling.

‘Broken Universe’ coming to the WWE?

Ever since Matt and Jeff made their surprise WWE return at WrestleMania 33, fans have wonder if we would see ever see the “Broken Universe” on that stage. Now, it appears that it will happen.

After losing to Bray Wyatt this past Monday on “RAW,” Matt Hardy remained slumped in a corner of the ring and began screaming “Delete!” over and over while throwing his arm out to the side with fans doing the same in unison.

This is the first step of him officially returning to the “Broken” character that he developed with Impact Wrestling and earned rave reviews.

The Hardys and Anthem Sports and Entertainment, the parent company of Impact Wrestling, have been entangled in a legal dispute regarding the ownership of the “Broken Universe” intellectual property and the characters.

Anthem Executive Vice President Ed Nordholm recently sent this statement to SI.com: “We have seen the character development and will be interested to see where they take the concept. Our new talent agreements all incorporate language that allow talent to continue to use their IMPACT persona after they leave the company. We are working with our legal team to amend our existing agreements to extend this to all of our current and former talent.”

In other words, Hardy is free and clear to use the character in the WWE.

It’s an amazing development and one never seen before in wrestling with Impact Wrestling allowing talent to retain ownership of their characters, including ones that are created and developed with the company.

The question now is will the WWE truly embrace the “Broken” Matt Hardy character and the entire “Broken Universe” including all of its subtleties and quirkiness that made it a viral sensation.

If WWE makes a real investment into the character including an explanation of how he became broken for the fans that aren’t familiar with him, than it could be a huge boost for Matt and another impactful star that WWE can utilize.

Bullet Club super-show

Never say that Cody Rhodes isn’t up for a challenge.

He has quelled doubters by walking away from the WWE and proved himself on the independent circuit — including his current run as the Ring of Honor World Champion and a member of the prestigious Bullet Club.

The latest challenge he is embarking on is teaming with the Young Bucks to put on 10,000-seat “All In” super-show. The trio is currently scouting buildings in various cities and hope to announce soon when and where it will take place later this year.

Cody recently stated on the “Busted Open” show that his dream scenario for the event would be to defend the ROH World Title against Daniel Bryan.

If they could Bryan on the show, especially in his first match back, would give them a real chance of hitting the lofty goal. First things first as Bryan has to receive medical clearance that he can return to the ring and he would have to not re-sign with the WWE. The company could make him an attractive deal if it allowed him to wrestle but there are a lot of hoops to jump through before that could happen.

Another consideration is that Bullet Club is trying to galvanize fans in their efforts with the hope to get people from around the world to be a part of this show. Don’t underestimate the power of wrestling fans and their willingness to support something they feel is a big event worthy of their time and money.

Starrcade return a hit

All signs point to the Starrcade-themed show this past weekend being a rousing success.

WWE wisely took the opportunity to make what would be a regular house show at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex in North Carolina and turned it into a special event built around the original NWA Starrcade event that took place in the same building back in 1983.

The company went all out in making special video packages and graphics for the “SmackDown Live” brand matches along with special appearances from NWA legends including Ricky Steamboat, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express, and The “Nature Boy” Ric Flair who continues to improve following his recent health scare. Even Arn Anderson broke out a picture-perfect spinebuster on Dolph Ziggler to the delight of the audience.

The show wasn’t sold out but drew a larger audience than an average WWE house show. Plus, the company did extremely well selling the special merchandise that was available to commemorate the event. It was such a hit that WWE is likely going to do the show again next year around Thanksgiving.

While there was an outcry from some to have this event air live on the WWE Network, the production costs were likely too high. But the company would be wise to try something similar in other markets with some history attached to a past pay-per-view — just not WCW Hog Wild.

News and notes

— Drew McIntyre confirmed that he was injured in his recent “TakeOver” match that saw him lose the NXT Championship to Andrade Almas.

McIntyre suffered a torn biceps and has already begun rehab following surgery. There’s no doubt that the Scotsman is driven to return as soon as possible and will try to make it back in time for WrestleMania 34 week next April in New Orleans.

— Kurt Angle had his right leg taped up during the main event of Survivor Series and was limited in what he could do in the ring. The “RAW” GM recently explained on his Facebook page that he tore a muscle doing wind sprints two days before the event and he should be back to 100 percent soon.

— It was quite the busy night for Kane on Monday night with “RAW” in Knoxville, Tenn. That happens to be in Knox County where, as Glenn Jacobs, he is running for county mayor. After having to escape an attack from Braun Strowman in the final minutes of the show and suffering an injured throat, Jacobs held a campaign rally at nearby Calhoun’s BBQ restaurant. Here’s hoping he at least wore the mask.

— Just to prove that wrestlers are the biggest fans, here’s The Rock telling a story from his childhood when he marked out for Hulk Hogan.

— And more of The Rock as he shows off his festive side on the latest cover of Entertainment Weekly.

He really is “The Great One.”

Redskins Gameday: Cowboys run away with win against Washington

Game analysis

Final: Cowboys 38, Redskins 14

The Dallas Cowboys decisively defeated the turnover-prone Redskins to improve their record to 6-6 and pull ahead of Washington in the playoff race. Realistically, the loss likely ends any postseason hopes for Washington, now 5-7, who trail the Cowboys, Packers, Lions, Seahawks, Falcons and Panthers for the two NFC wild-card spots.

McCoy in for Cousins

Kirk Cousins didn’t finish a dismal game in Dallas as Colt McCoy came on to quarterback the final drive for Washington. Cousins, one of the few Redskins starters who has not missed time this season, took a big shot on the previous drive but remained in the game.

Smith salts the wound | Cowboys 38, Redskins 14

After a tipped pass resulted in another Kirk Cousins interception, the Cowboys poured on seven more points with another rushing touchdown, this time by Rod Smith.

Washington can’t stop the run as Alfred Morris scores | Cowboys 31, Redskins 14

The Redskins needed to halt the Cowboys quickly to get the ball back. Instead they watched their former RB reel off big run after big run and ultimately score on a one-yard plunge to effectively put the game out of reach. Alfred Morris now has a touchdown to go along with 127 rushing yards on the day. It’s his first 100-yard performance since he was a member of the Redskins in 2015, when he did it against the Cowboys.

Redskins strike fast with Doctson TD | Cowboys 24, Redskins 14

Washington needed a quick strike and they got one. Josh Doctson skied in the back right side of the end zone and hauled in a Kirk Cousins pass to get the Redskins back in the game. Washington went 87 yards in just 9 plays and 3:25 to put the gap back to 10 points.

Dez Bryant delivers | Cowboys 24, Redskins 7

Dak Prescott threw it up and Dez Bryan pulled it down for what could be a decisive blow to the Redskins. Now up by three possessions in the fourth quarter, the Cowboys can keep chewing up clock with their running game, while the Redskins need to get their offense in gear ASAP.

Redskins may have missed their chance

Washington had an opportunity to make this a one-score game in the third quarter, but Dallas dictated the tempo and flow of the third quarter by leaning on running back Alfred Morris. He’s received some nice running lanes from the Cowboys offensive line to slow the game down.

Washington’s defense hasn’t been able to stop it, and it’s hard to see this team crawl back in this game at the moment. — Master Tesfatsion

As fourth quarter begins, Cowboys threatening

Already a two-possession game, the Cowboys are again in the red zone. Largely held in check in the first half, the Dallas running game has gashed Washington in the second half, with Alfred Morris already over 80 yards rushing. As the Cowboys keep moving the chains, the clock keeps running and time keeps running out for the Redskins’ postseason hopes.

A quiet third quarter so far

The Redskins have been unable to build on any momentum generated by their touchdown at the end of the first half. Two drives have produced no points thus far, with just over 20 minutes remaining in a game Washington has to have to realistically keep its playoff hopes alive.

Injury update

Morgan Moses remains questionable to return but is not playing on the Redskins’ first drive of the second half. The good news however is that running back Samaje Perine has cleared the concussion protocol.

Meanwhile, Maurice Harris has been ruled out with a concussion.

It ain’t over until it’s over

The Redskins aren’t out of it. They scored a touchdown within the final minute of the first half, and they will get the ball to start the third quarter down 17-7. Dallas has fared poorly in the third quarter this season, so this game can quickly change in the next 15 minutes of play. — Master Tesfatsion

Turnovers have clearly crippled Washington

The Dallas offense has been nothing special so far, averaging just 2.9 yards per play in the first half and just barely cracking 100 total yards (103). But the Cowboys built a 17-7 lead thanks to a punt return TD and getting three takeaways from Washington to help provide good field position — and keep Washington off the scoreboard until the final minute of the first half.

Cousins rallies Redskins for late first-half touchdown | Cowboys 17, Redskins 7

Just when it looked like Dallas could put their foot down, another potential fumble was ruled down by contact, allowing Washington to begin a nine-play, 75-yard scoring drive that was capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins to Ryan Grant. The score breathed some life into a Redskins offensive unit that was averaging just 2.8 yards per play prior to that scoring drive.

Concussion watch

Both Maurice Harris and Samaje Perine are being evaluated for potential concussions as things keep breaking bad for Washington.

A first-half disaster in Dallas

This game has quickly turned into a disaster for Washington. It has had two turnovers on offense, a turnover on special teams and now allowed a punt return for a touchdown. Tress Way out-kicked his coverage on a punt return, which Ryan Switzer returned 83 yards for a touchdown.

What an ugly game against a team that hasn’t been playing well in the last month. — Master Tesfatsion

Dak Prescott to locker room, Cowboys don’t need him | Cowboys 17, Redskins 0

After quarterback Dak Prescott was taken to the locker room to examine his right hand, injured on the previous scoring drive, the Cowboys never even had to use his backup. Ryan Switzer returned a Redskins punt 83 yards for a touchdown, putting Washington in a serious hole, particularly considering the offense has been largely ineffective this evening.

Redskins need to get their act together

The Redskins have as many turnovers (three) as first downs midway through the second quarter. Kirk Cousins coughed up the ball on a sack fumble on third down, which resulted in a field goal for Dallas. They’re killing themselves with turnovers and terrible field position in the first half. — Master Tesfatsion

Cowboys convert Redskins turnover for three more points | Cowboys 10, Redskins 0

Dallas made Washington pay for its third turnover of the game, but had to settle for a field goal rather than a touchdown with just over 5:30 to play in the first half.

Bad to worse: Redskins turn ball over for third time

Kirk Cousins lost the football as he was being sacked by DeMarcus Lawrence, giving the Cowboys the ball at the Redskins’ 19-yard line.

Another game, another lineman down

Right tackle Morgan Moses went down with 10:31 left in the second quarter and could not get up, eventually getting carted off the field. It continues a dismal trend for Washington’s offensive linemen.

Prescott gets first TD throw in three weeks

As bad as the Cowboys offense has been without Ezekiel Elliott, it was able to find the end zone. Dak Prescott did not throw a touchdown pass in the previous three weeks, but he connected with Jason Witten to give Dallas a 7-0 lead in the second quarter. Washington’s offensive players were on the sideline stretching to keep warm as its defense was on the field for over six minutes. — Master Tesfatsion

Cowboys come alive, score first TD | Cowboys 7, Redskins 0

After four straight three-and-outs to start the game, the Cowboys finally got their offense in gear and scored on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Dak Prescott to Jason Witten.

Another ugly game early

If you thought last Thursday’s game against the New York Giants was tough to watch, this one isn’t any better. We have six punts and an interception on the first seven drives during a scoreless first quarter. The Cowboys offense stinks, meanwhile Jamison Crowder has created to giveaways on offense and special teams to kill any momentum Washington attempted to build in the opening quarter. No wonder the stands are pretty empty. — Master Tesfatsion

Crowder’s hands hurt Washington again

After a dropped pass by Jamison Crowder resulted in an interception the Cowboys were forced to punt. That’s when Crowder fumbled the punt return to give the ball back to Dallas at the Washington 43-yard line.

The Redskins defense bailed him out again, however, forcing its fourth straight three-and-out to start the game.

Drops hurt Redskins again

Just as it looked like the Redskins were destined to score the first points of the game, a rifled throw from Kirk Cousins glanced off the hands of Jamison Crowder and into those of Dallas safety Jeff Heath.

Dropped passes have killed Washington’s offense at times this season. So far, it has two against the Cowboys.

It’s a costly turnover on what was otherwise a nice drive for the Redskins. — Master Tesfatsion

Washington defense looking good

The Redskins defense has forced two three-and-outs to start the game. It has done a great job stopping the run to force passing downs, giving Washington the opportunity to bring pressure at quarterback Dak Prescott. Rookie Josh Harvey-Clemons recorded his first career sack on the Cowboy’s second third down play as Washington’s defensive line and outside linebackers quickly collapsed the pocket. — Master Testfatsion

Redskins defense starts strong while Cowboys sputter

The Cowboys offense has scuffled without Ezekiel Elliott and it doesn’t look much improved so far against the Redskins.

Washington forced two three-and-outs to start the game, earning some great field position for its second drive of the game, starting inside Dallas territory.

Swearinger gives tribute to Sean Taylor with cleats

This week is the NFL’s “My Cause, My Cleats” week, allowing players the chance to wear custom cleats to honor their charitable causes. D.J. Swearinger’s sweet shoes pay tribute to former Redskins safety Sean Taylor, killed 10 years ago this past Monday.

What a rush

The Redskins will be wearing their “Color Rush” uniforms tonight, meaning they will be clad from head to toe in burgundy. You can read more here from Dan Steinberg.

Hope you like burgundy.

Injury report and inactives

The Redskins have already ruled out tight end Jordan Reed, as well as center Chase Roullier, safety Montae Nicholson and defensive lineman Terrell McClain.

The big news is that Trent Williams is active and will start after missing last Thursday’s game against the New York Giants. With Williams back at left tackle, Washington is pushing Ty Nsekhe over to left guard, where he will start in place of Arie Kouandjio.

Meanwhile the Cowboys have made linebacker Sean Lee inactive, a key piece in a struggling defensive unit.

Cowboys vs. Washington 2017 live results: Score updates and highlights from 'Thursday Night Football'

Week 13 NFL two-team teaser, betting predictions: Trust the Patriots, Tom Brady

Do you feel like you know which team is going to win, but are hesitant on the point spread? A teaser bet may be the answer.

A teaser allows you to change the spread, often 6.5 points, or move the Over-Under 6.5 points. You need to tease at least two bets, and a two-pick teaser returns even money. You can stay within one sport or game or cross over into other sports and games.

Before deciding on a teaser for Week 13, you’ll want to see Adam Silverstein’s picks.

Silverstein, an assistant managing editor at CBS Sports, has been picking NFL games since 2002. Though he will take the occasional underdog, Silverstein often looks for value with the favorites, especially after sharp money comes in and lines fall below key numbers. This method allowed him to open the 2017 college football season 19-11-1 ATS after finishing the 2016 season picking gridiron games at a 62 percent clip.

He has a hot hand on NFL picks, too. In fact, he’s on a 14-7, 67-percent run on selections. Now, he has two games to package as part of a teaser bet, shaving 6.5 points off current spreads.

Here’s one we can tell you: Silverstein is big on a Patriots line of just -2.5 instead of the posted -9.

New England is on a quest to defend its Super Bowl championship, winners of seven in a row and tied with Pittsburgh atop the AFC at 9-2.

Of the Patriots’ nine victories, three came by eight points or less. But they were all by three points or more.

Buffalo ended a three-game losing streak by downing the fading Chiefs 16-10 in Kansas City. At 6-5, the Bills really need a win if they have any chance to challenge the Pats in the AFC East, and a victory puts them in a favorable position in the crowded playoff picture.

New England’s offense has overwhelmed foes, ranking No. 1 in total yards (411.2 per game) and No. 3 in scoring (29.5 points per game). Tom Brady is having another MVP year, leading the league in passing yards (3,374) with 26 touchdowns and just three interceptions.

Asking any team to win on the road by two scores is a tough sell, but asking New England to win in Buffalo by a single field goal? That sounds pretty good!

Silverstein also has a lot of confidence in an even bigger favorite he’s dropping the spread for, and he’s sharing that over at SportsLine.

So what is Silverstein’s teaser play of the week? Visit SportsLine now to see which lines look irresistible when you shave off a few points, all from the man who’s a scorching 14-7 run on NFL picks, and find out.

Best and worst moments from Redskins-Cowboys on Thursday Night Football

Kirk Cousins scrambles in the first quarter. (Photo by Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)

Best and worst moments from Thursday’s Redskins-Cowboys game at AT&T Stadium. This post will be updated throughout the game.

Worst shock: If you thought a first half that already featured three Redskins turnovers, an injury to Morgan Moses and Samaje Perine being evaluated for a concussion couldn’t get any worse with less than four minutes remaining until halftime, you were mistaken. Ryan Switzer covered 24 yards more than Washington’s offense had managed on five drives on his 83-yard punt return for a touchdown that gave Dallas a 17-0 lead with 3:46 to play in the second quarter.

Best signs of life: The Redskins’ offense answered before the half, cutting Dallas’s lead to 17-7 with a 75-yard drive capped by Kirk Cousins’s 20-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Grant.

Best throw: Washington converted two crucial third downs on its first scoring drive, a six-yard scramble by Cousins and a 33-yard catch-and-run-and-non-fumble by Jamison Crowder. On the catch by Crowder, Cousins was flushed out of the pocket and unleashed a throw while backpedaling away from a Cowboys defender. It looked like another potential interception when it left his hand, but it was a thing of beauty.

Worst swelling: Cowboys quarterback went to the locker room for X-rays on his right hand after taking a hit in the second quarter, but didn’t miss a snap. It can’t be easy to throw when your hand looks like a partially deflated balloon.

Best catch: Swelling and all, Prescott completed three of four passes on an 11-play scoring the drive that bridged the third and fourth quarters. Dez Bryant’s 13-yard touchdown catch over Bashaud Breeland, who was called for pass interference on the play, was the 72nd of his career, breaking Bob Hayes’s franchise record. With 14:53 remaining in the game, the Cowboys led 24-7 and had a 98.6 percent win probability.

Best quick-strike offense: It took the Redskins nine plays and a little more than three minutes to respond, on Josh Doctson’s leaping, 14-yard touchdown grab. Cousins was 8-for-8 on the drive with completions to five different receivers.

Worst deficit: If only Jason Witten had abruptly retired to take the vacant head coaching position at Tennessee before Thursday’s game. The Cowboys tight end, who recently denied a rumor that he was interested in replacing the fired Butch Jones at his alma mater, caught a touchdown pass from Prescott to cap an 11-play drive early in the second quarter. It was Prescott’s first touchdown pass in four games and the extra point gave Dallas a 7-0 lead.

Worst sight: The Redskins got Trent Williams back after the all-pro left tackle missed last week’s game with a knee injury, but they lost Morgan Moses in the second quarter. Moses, the only member of Washington’s injury-ravaged offensive line to start every game this season, was carted off the field after his left leg was accidentally rolled up on by Dallas’s David Irving. NFL Network’s Heather Cox reported before the game that Williams, left guard Ty Nsekhe, center Tony Bergstrom, right guard Brandon Scherff and Moses represented the Redskins’ league-high 21st different offensive line combination of the season. Make it 22 … in 12 games.

Worst insult to injury: Two plays after Moses left the game, Cousins fumbled while being sacked by Demarcus Lawrence. The Cowboys recovered at the Washington 19-yard line and converted the turnover into a short field goal to take a 10-0 lead.

Best field position: The Cowboys went three-and-out on their first two possessions, the second one ending with a punt from deep in their end zone after Josh Harvey-Clemons and Preston Smith combined to sack Prescott at the Dallas 4-yard line. As a result, the Redskins’s second drive began in Cowboys territory.

Worst drop: A roughing the passer penalty by Maliek Collins on third-and-long prolonged the Redskins’ ensuing drive, but Washington couldn’t capitalize on the mistake. With the Redskins inside the red zone four plays later, a well-placed Cousins pass deflected off of Crowder’s hands and into the arms of Cowboys safety Jeff Heath.

Worst fumble: Crowder has been one of Washington’s biggest contributors over the last four weeks, but his night would get worse before it got better. After the Cowboys went three-and-out yet again following Heath’s interception, Crowder gave the ball right back to Dallas by fumbling on the punt return. Two turnovers on two touches is an impressively awful ratio. Crowder was ruled down by contact before fumbling a subsequent kickoff return and the call stood upon replay review.

Best diagnosis: “The Redskins have a case of the dropsies tonight,” Dr. Mike Tirico declared after Cousins fumbled for a second time on a sack by Taco Charlton late in the second quarter. Fortunately for Washington, Samaje Perine pounced on the loose ball.

Worst offense: In the first three games of Ezekiel Elliott’s six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, the Cowboys were outscored 92-22 in three losses. The Cowboys entered the game with two touchdowns on their previous 34 possessions and didn’t record a first down against Washington until the final play of the first quarter.

Worst football: And you thought the start to the Redskins-Giants game on Thanksgiving was ugly … . The Cowboys and Redskins combined for 76 yards, four first downs, six punts and two turnovers in a scoreless first quarter. “This game has a playoff-like feel to it,” NFL Network’s Marshall Faulk said on the pregame show. Give me Sunday’s 49ers-Giants game instead.

Best “Color Rush” compromise: Retinas rejoiced, as Washington didn’t debut the all-mustard “Color Rush” jerseys featured in promotional images for Thursday Night Football last September. Instead, the Redskins, who deemed their yellow “Color Rush” alternates “garish,” wore all burgundy, a look they last sported in the “Swinging Gate” game against the Giants in 2009. The Redskins are 0-3 all-time, including a 2009 loss to Dallas on Thanksgiving, in all-burgundy.

Worst streak: The visiting Redskins were 1.5-point favorites at kickoff, a rarity in this rivalry. The last time Washington was a favorite at Dallas was in 2004. The Redskins are 3-7 straight up as a road favorite against the Cowboys since 1978 and have lost five consecutive games in that role dating back to 1992.

Best running game: Rookie Samaje Perine is looking to become the first Redskins running back to rush for at least 100 yards in three consecutive games since Alfred Morris in Weeks 12-14 of the 2012 season.

Best tape job: Redskins safety D.J. Swearinger’s pregame routine has involved watching a video montage of Sean Taylor since his junior year of high school. On Thursday, Swearinger paid tribute to Taylor, who was murdered 10 years ago this past Monday, by wrapping pieces of white tape around his face mask as Taylor used to do. Ravens safety Tony Jefferson did the same thing to honor Taylor on “Monday Night Football” and intercepted his first pass of the season in a Baltimore win. Swearinger, who has three interceptions in his last three games, also paid tribute to Taylor on one of his custom cleats.

Worst homer: NFL Network analysts Rich Eisen, Steve Smith and Michael Irvin made their picks during the pregame show. While Eisen and Smith both predicted a double-digit Redskins win, Irvin, who played his entire career with the Cowboys and helped lead them to three Super Bowl wins, predicted a narrow Dallas victory.

Best bit: To no one’s surprise, Redskins radio voice Larry Michael, the newest Pro Football Hall of Fame voter, predicted Washington would win the Skintangibles battle and prevail in Big D.

Michigan State handles Notre Dame for 18-point win in top-5 matchup

EAST LANSING – Michigan State point guard Cassius Winston found his shooting stroke in the Pacific Northwest over the weekend, where he set career-highs en route to an MVP performance at the Phil Knight Invitational.

He brought that stroke home on Thursday, where he used it to slay a top five opponent as the Breslin Center crowd chanted his name.

No. 3 Michigan State beat No. 5 Notre Dame, 81-63, after seeing a 20-point first half lead shrink as small as seven points on Thursday night.

Winston scored 17 points, including nine in the final seven minutes as he fended off Notre Dame’s second-half charge.

Joshua Langford added 17 of his own, including 12 in the first half, while Miles Bridges finished with 14.

The Spartans played a nearly flawless opening 10 minutes and looked like they would cruise to a surprisingly easy top-five win.

It hit better than 60 percent of its shots, with offense coming from the long range, the frontcourt and in transition. Bridges quickly showed he was looking like his old self 10 days after suffering an ankle injury when he finished an alley-oop feed from Winston two minutes into the game that sent the capacity Breslin Center crowd into a frenzy.

Defensively, it replicated its shutdown performance from Sunday’s win over North Carolina, holding Notre Dame to just 30 percent shooting. The Irish came in as one of the most efficient offensive teams in the country.

Spartans freshman Jaren Jackson Jr., in particular, shut down Notre Dame preseason All-American Bonzie Colson early with a pair of blocks. Michigna State also grabbed 12 of the first 13 rebounds — including grabbing four of its five misses — turned the ball over just three times and committed no fouls.

That staked the Spartans to a 20-point lead 10 minutes into the game, a lead they kept going into halftime up 46-26.

That margin wouldn’t last. Jackson picked up his third foul on a charge 30 seconds into the half and had to leave the game, allowing Colson to drop in six points in six minutes. Point guard Matt Farrell also found his shot for eight points, as Notre Dame went on a 20-7 run to pull within seven points, at 53-46 with 13:09 left. The Irish were aided by five Michigan State fouls and four turnovers in the stretch.

Notre Dame stayed close for the next seven minutes — aided by the fact that Jackson returned for just 64 seconds before picking up his fourth foul.

The Spartans at last pulled away in the final seven minutes. Winston hit a 3-pointer with 6:47 left and fed Bridges for another alley-oop that led to a Notre Dame timeout and an emphatic fist pump from Tom Izzo.

Notre Dame answered with back-to-back 3-pointers to pull within 10, before a 10-point Michigan State run that included two more Winston 3-pointers sealed the win.

On the heels of a weekend win at the Phil Knight Invitational, capped by a Sunday win over No. 9 North Carolina, Michigan State made its early season loss to Duke a distant memory and staked its claim as one of the hottest teams in the country.

Michigan State now moves on to a two-game set of December Big Ten games, starting on Sunday with a home game against Nebraska.

Game Notes

* Spartans junior forward Kenny Goins made his first appearance after a two-week absence due to a left knee sprain. Izzo said on his pregame radio show that Goins began practicing earlier this week but would only be used in an emergency.

* Bridges started limping with five minutes left in the first half following a block attempt. He went to the bench briefly but declined medical attention and checked back in after just 1:24 out.

* The win extended Michigan State’s streak of home November wins to 65 games. The game marked just the third matchup between top five teams in East Lansing and the first between non-conference opponents.

College Football Odds: Who's Favored in Big Ten, AAC Championship Games?

Can Wisconsin and UCF keep up their undefeated seasons? Betting lines for the Big Ten and AAC championship games.

The No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes are 5–0 straight up and 4–1 against the spread in their last five games against No. 4 Wisconsin Badgers. The Buckeyes will try to extend that winning streak to six games and win the Big Ten championship when they take on the Badgers this Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Ohio State is a 6.5-point favorite in Indianapolis at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. It had appeared that the Buckeyes had fallen out of the College Football Playoff conversation when they took a 55–24 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes in early November, but the landscape has shaken out in such a way that a win over undefeated Wisconsin might earn Ohio State a spot. The Buckeyes are 46–5 SU over their last 51 games.

Wisconsin has managed to fly under the radar for most of the year despite an impressive 12–0 SU and 8–4 ATS run through its schedule. The Badgers have covered the spread in each of their last four games and are 25–3 SU and 19-7-2 ATS over their last 28 games per the OddsShark College Football Database.

Ohio State has been a consistent thorn in Wisconsin’s side over the last few years, making the prospect of beating the Buckeyes for a spot in the College Football Playoff that much sweeter to the Badgers.

The Badgers won’t be the only undefeated team in action this Saturday. The No. 14 UCF Knights are 11–0 SU and 6-4-1 ATS this season and will try to wrap up their undefeated season in the AAC Championship Game facing the No. 20 Memphis Tigers. UCF is a 7-point favorite at home.

Memphis is 10–1 SU and 7–4 ATS this season with its only loss of the year coming at UCF by a score of 40–12 back on September 30. Since that loss, the Tigers are 7–0 SU and 6–1 ATS with an average margin of victory of 25.9 points per game.

Central Florida is a perfect 10–0 SU in its last 10 games against Memphis with a 6–4 ATS record over that stretch. These are the two highest-scoring offenses in college football with the Knights averaging 48.3 points per game and the Tigers averaging 47.

FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) – As the University of Arkansas searched for a new director of athletics, the chatter continued to be about hiring someone who knew what it meant to be a Razorback.

Three separate sources confirmed to 5NEWS Sports Director Bobby Swofford that Dr. Derrick Gragg will be the Razorbacks’ next Director of Athletics.

Gragg spent the past four-plus years at the University of Tulsa and was the senior associate athletic director at Arkansas under Frank Broyles from 2000-2006.

Gragg received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt after playing receiver for the Commodores (1988-91) then received a masters degree from Wayne State in 1999 and a doctorate degree from Arkansas in 2004.

In his first two years at Tulsa, Gragg saw the university move to the American Athletic Conference and brought in Frank Haith as the men’s basketball coach and Phillip Montgomery as the Golden Hurricane’s football coach. According to the Tulsa athletic department’s website, the Golden Hurricane student-athletes have a graduation rate of 85 percent during Gragg’s tenure.

Gragg, a Huntsville, Ala. native, has been a college administrator since 1993 when he was the director of student life at Vanderbilt and was Director of Athletics at both Eastern Michigan (2006-13) and Tulsa (2013-17) prior to being hired at Arkansas.

College football expert picks for Championship Week: Oklahoma easily covers spread in Big 12 title game

Before you make any bets or picks for championship weekend in college football, you need to hear what Barrett Sallee has to say. A CBS Sports college football expert, ESPNU SiriusXM Radio host and Heisman Trophy voter, Sallee is absolutely crushing the books this season.

He continues to be among the top CBS Sports experts picking college football games against the spread and has nailed over 60 percent of the best bets he has shared with SportsLine this season.

When he shared his favorite selections last week, he correctly said that Oklahoma would cover a giant 22.5-point spread against West Virginia, even though quarterback Baker Mayfield didn’t start for disciplinary reasons. The result: Sallee cashed yet again as OU continued its march to the playoff with a 59-31 victory over the Mountaineers that covered the spread with room to spare.

Now, Sallee has studied the matchups for college football championship weekend and he is again sharing his favorite picks over at SportsLine.

We’ll give one away: Sallee is once again calling for No. 2 Oklahoma (-7) to win and cover against No. 10 TCU in the Big 12 title game.

TCU leads the Big 12 in every major defensive category, but the Horned Frogs will be tested in a huge way by Mayfield and Oklahoma’s potent offense, which ranks first in the conference at almost 600 yards per game.

“The Heisman Trophy is in Sooner quarterback Baker Mayfield’s sights,” Sallee said. “He will lock it down with a big win over the Horned Frogs that not only secures the sport’s most prestigious individual award, but his team a spot in the College Football Playoff.”

SportsLine’s advanced projections say TCU’s stout defense won’t slow Mayfield down, as he’ll pile up 330 yards and two touchdowns through the air. The Horned Frogs will have quarterback Kenny Hill back from injury and the projections have him throwing for 237 yards.

Oklahoma knocked off TCU 38-20 on Nov. 12, and you can confidently lock in the Sooners to go 2-0 on the year both straight up and against the spread against the Horned Frogs.

Sallee is also calling for a huge favorite to get a major shock this weekend, possibly shaking up the college football postseason. Find out who it is at SportsLine and you could be well on your way to a profitable weekend.

So who is Sallee extremely confident in for championship weekend? Visit SportsLine now to see which favorite is about to roll to a huge victory and which favorite is in from a huge shock, all from one of CBS’s most accurate college football experts who nailed Oklahoma’s easy cover over West Virginia last week and is cashing on over 60 percent of his best bets given to SportsLine.

Springfield (4-2) put the game away in the second quarter with a 21-2 run, sparked by 8 points from Collin Hayden, who finished with 10 points.

With a 37-16 lead at the half, four players scored in the third quarter as the Bulldogs led 49-27 going into the final period.

Why NC State football coach Dave Doeren chose the Wolfpack over Tennessee

Dave Doeren woke up with a choice on Thursday: Tennessee or N.C. State?

Doeren turned down a bigger offer from the SEC school to stay with the Wolfpack after his best season in Raleigh.

The N.C. State board of trustees is expected to approve a five-year contract, worth about $3 million per year, on Friday.

The school announced the two sides had come to an agreement on Thursday after Tennessee had courted the fifth-year Wolfpack coach.

“This is what I wanted all along,” Doeren said in an interview on Thursday. “I’m thankful to the university for giving me the time and security that I need to build a program everybody is proud of.”

N.C. State is 8-4 and ranked No. 24 in the College Football Playoff poll. Doeren was hired by athletic director Debbie Yow after the 2012 season to build a top-25 program.

It has taken Doeren some time, and there have been some bumps in the road, but Doeren has reached that goal.

The two sides had hoped to work out an agreement in October, after the Wolfpack had started the season at 6-1, but couldn’t come to an agreement on the length of the contract.

Doeren’s current deal is worth about $2.2 million per year, and he has three years left on it. Among the 12 publicly available contracts, Doeren’s current deal ranks 10th in the ACC, according to the USA Today database.

Doeren, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, had wanted a five-year deal, a raise that would put him in the middle of the ACC pecking order and a bigger pool of money for his assistant coaches.

The negotiations broke down, primarily over the length of the contract, before N.C. State had closed the regular season with a 33-21 win over North Carolina.

Doeren had considered an offer from Oregon State and was in preliminary talks with Mississippi before talks with Tennessee reached the point where he was offered the job on Wednesday night.

Related stories from Raleigh News & Observer

Tennessee, which had paid former coach Butch Jones $4 million a year, had been prepared to pay Doeren the same amount, according to a source.

Doeren, who has a 33-30 record at N.C. State, ultimately took significantly less money to stay in Raleigh.

Tennessee’s search, looking more every day like N.C. State’s wild, protracted search for a basketball coach in 2006, had already been through four candidates, including Duke’s David Cutcliffe, before it reached Doeren.

Tennessee athletic director John Currie met with Doeren on Wednesday afternoon in Raleigh to discuss the Volunteers’ opening.

N.C. State countered with an offer on Wednesday night, and Doeren woke up on Thursday, weighing the chance to make more money at Tennessee against the chance to build on his recent success with the Wolfpack.

“Dave has made significant strides in developing a complete program at N.C. State, and this new contract continues our commitment to his leadership,” Yow said in a statement released by the school.

“We want to support the continued growth of the program under Dave, the culture he has established, the competitive and academic gains he’s helped us achieve and his continued progress in recruiting.”

Doeren, who turns 46 on Sunday, has a strong recruiting class lined up this year. Kicker Chris Dunn and quarterback Devin Leary are the key additions in the class.

N.C. State will lose 20 seniors from this year’s team, which finished 6-2 in the ACC for the first time since 1994.

Doeren was already back on the road recruiting on Thursday. He was in Hillsborough hoping to land linebacker Payton Wilson, a high-profile in-state recruit.

Doeren was given the choice on Thursday, and there was no other place he would rather be.

“I’m glad it’s over,” Doeren said.

LeBron James 'Bothered' Dwyane Wade Signing Was Unpopular with Cavs Players

NEW YORK, NY - NOVEMBER 13: (NEW YORK DAILIES OUT) LeBron James #23 and Dwyane Wade #9 of the Cleveland Cavaliers look on against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on November 13, 2017 in New York City. Dwyane Wade has started to settle into life with the Cleveland Cavaliers during their recent nine-game winning streak, but the start of his tenure with the team was evidently a bit rocky.

Speaking to The Athletic’s Jason Lloyd (h/t USA Today‘s Erik Garcia Gundersen), LeBron James disclosed several of his teammates weren’t thrilled by the team’s decision to bring Wade aboard on a one-year deal.

“There was a couple guys with it,” James told Lloyd. “But it wasn’t a lot.

“I still know what he’ capable of doing. Why wouldn’t you want another guy in the locker room that brings a championship mentality and a guy who can still play? So, of course, it bothered me, but f–k it. It is what it is.”

LeBron’s candor comes less than two months after ESPN.com’s Brian Windhorst reported Wade’s signing “triggered some angst within the Cavaliers organization” because it forced out Richard Jefferson and required head coach Tyronn Lue to reshuffle his starting lineup by sending JR Smith to the bench.

However, it wasn’t long before Wade and the Cavaliers agreed a move to the second unit was best for the team.

“For me, coming here, knowing I could be on the second unit and all the guys that could be on that unit, I thought that was important for me to come,” Wade told Cleveland.com’s Joe Vardon

“That’s why I took myself out of the starting lineup early, because I knew that would be the most important thing for this team, to be on that unit. That’s what I thought coming here.”

Entering Thursday night’s game against the Atlanta Hawks, Wade is averaging 11.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game while shooting 42.9 percent from the field through 14 games in November.

Broken down further, Wade has registered 12.9 points, 5.2 boards, 4.1 dimes and 1.1 steals a night over the nine-game winning streak that has seen the 14-7 Cavaliers vault all the way up to No. 3 in the Eastern Conference.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal dominance signals huge problems in tennis – Marat Safin

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal cleared up on the tour this year, rolling back the years to win two Grand Slam titles each.

Nadal, 31, reasserted his dominance on the clay with victory at Roland Garros and was also on top at the US Open.

While 38-year-old Federer sealed his eighth Wimbledon title and scooped the Australian Open in Melbourne.

And former world No 1 Marat Safin thinks the two veterans’ dominance is a sad indictment of the sport, citing a lack of young talent as a major issue for tennis.

“If Federer and Nadal are still winning I think there’s something wrong,” Safin told The Independent.

“I don’t see any upcoming superstars today.

“I’m not saying that our times were the best, but when I was growing up, players were winning ATP tournaments at 16, 17, 18.

“Now players are only just starting to be pros at the age of 25. I don’t know why that is.

“Players used to retire by the time they got to 30. At 32 you were a dinosaur.

“Now you see players who are still running at the age of 38.

“The upcoming young guys just aren’t at a high enough level.

“If you can still manage to run at the age of 38 and still be No 1 in the world, it means there must be something wrong with the other players.”

Colin reacts to Dave Doeren turning down the Tennessee head football coaching vacancy

– Dave Doeren, the third best college football coach in the state of North Carolina, has turned down Tennessee.

KRISTINE LEAHY: No.

– This is currently the people who have turned down Tennessee, Jon Gruden, Mike Gundy, the Cowboys current tight end, Jeff Brohm at Purdue, David Cutcliffe, Jim Bob Cooter, and David Doeren, the North Carolina State head coach. When Purdue and North Carolina State’s coaches are turning you down, maybe it’s time to do a Manning in the mirror.

You had a really good coach. Dan Mullen, Greg Schiano are really solid coaches. Wait, I’m told there’s one more person that just turned down Tennessee’s job. Kid Rock has just turned down Tennessee’s job.

Again, this all started with unrealistic expectations. Jon Gruden was never considering you. And when you put that name out there, everybody got all worked up. I told you from the beginning, I don’t know John well. I know people who know John. He ain’t taking that gig.

So you get everybody all lathered up. And then, when you get a good solid coach, you try to ruin his life. Nobody at Ohio State, nobody in the NFL, connects Schiano to the Penn State nightmare. Nobody does. And now, you’re left being turned down by mullets, Jim Bob Cooter, and Purdue’s head coach.

Men's Tennis Participating in St. Jude Run Saturday

Bookmark and Share

MEMPHIS – It’s technically pre-season time for the Memphis men’s tennis team, as the team finishes fall semester exams and looks toward their January-opener against Indiana to start the dual season. But before the sprints to run down the tennis balls on the court begin, the Tigers will join 22,000 other runners who are in town for the St. Jude Marathon Weekend. The Tigers will run in the 5K portion of the event, which features four sold out races (marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K).

Each race in the St. Jude Marathon weekend passes through the campus of St. Jude Children’s Hospital, one of the world’s premier pediatric cancer research centers. Families who have a child receiving treatment at St. Jude’s never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food to allow them to focus on their child’s health.  The annual marathon is the largest single-day fundraiser for St. Jude and the Tiger men’s tennis team has joined the fundraising challenge, looking to raise $1,000 for St. Jude.

Senior men’s tennis player Shakeel Manji is the captain for the team for this weekend’s run. He and his teammates have set up a page to fundraise for St. Jude HERE. This is the second St. Jude event the men’s tennis team has done according to Manji. The team also participated in the St. Jude Give Thanks Walk in his freshman season in November of 2014.

“St. Jude is an incredible organization based in our great city and we have personally been fortunate enough to spend time with the families of St. Jude and it’s been one of the best things we have been a part of,” Manji said. “As a team, we wanted to contribute to the fundraising efforts to say thank you. Taking part in the run this weekend will be a great experience for us and we know the money we raise will help those families who need the support and expertise that St. Jude offers.”

The fight against pediatric cancers is personal to the men’s tennis squad as Tiger senior Ryan Peniston was a pediatric cancer patient when he was young back in his native UK. One of the nurses who helped Peniston in his battle against childhood cancer had received additional training at St. Jude and Peniston has gone on to become an American Athletic Conference all-conference singles player for the Tigers.

The Memphis men’s tennis team, who has gone to five NCAA tournaments in the past six seasons, kicks off its 2018 spring season on Jan. 20th against Big 10 foe Indiana. That 6 p.m. match will be played indoors at The Racquet Club of Memphis, the home of the Memphis men’s and women’s tennis teams.

Holdrege tennis coach of 25 years was with school program since day one

HOLDREGE — Holdrege tennis began with Ray Ruybalid.

The tennis program at Holdrege High School began in 1992 when Ruybalid began coaching both boys and girls teams. He also helmed the Holdrege Tennis Association and organized local tennis tournaments throughout the year.

“Holdrege tennis, essentially, is Ray Ruybalid. He was there when the program got started, and he made it what it is,” Holdrege High School Principal Bob Drews said.

Ruybalid went on to coach tennis at the school for 25 years before he died Nov. 19 at the age of 55 while doing what he loved — playing tennis.

“He was what I call the ultimate coach. As a coach, he took it beyond the sport itself to life application, which I think epitomizes coaching, especially at that level. He was one of the best,” HHS assistant tennis coach Matt Snell said.

Senior Spencer Anderson knew Ruybalid through youth tennis camps Ruybalid coached as well as through his three older brothers because all of them played for Ruybalid.

“He was a big impact not just on the players, but the players’ families also. He’d go and just talk to the parents for awhile every invite, every dual and just make his rounds because he knew just about everyone,” Anderson said.

Students described Ruybalid as a coach who was always encouraging and knew what was best for his players, even if they didn’t see it quite as clearly.

“Sophomore year I was kind of thrown into like the toughest position — No. 1 singles — but he knew in the end that it would eventually lead to me getting better than I would have ever thought. He always knew that,” senior Jett Petit said.

Senior Kate Keffler had a similar experience during her first year on the varsity tennis team last year.

“I didn’t really like him coming and watching me. It made me nervous. By, I think, the Lincoln Tournament that we did at the end, I was playing my last match for first and second, and I was down quite a bit. I think it was like 2-7. He was like, ‘You know, you can either come back now or you can just give up.’ I worked harder, and it was like 6-7 eventually. His encouragement never failed,” she said.

Hard work and success was important to Ruybalid, but so was making sure the students had fun on and off the court. Last year during the girls’ tennis season, the team would often go to Texas Roadhouse to eat. Team members would prank Ruybalid by telling the waitress it was his birthday so he would have to ride a saddle while everyone sang to him.

“That was just a great memory. We have videos of that,” Keffler said.

Each year, the tennis teams attract a large number of participants with 18-30 on the boys’ team and more than 30 students on the girls’ team.

“A lot of people even if they weren’t good at tennis they wanted to go out just ’cause they knew he liked to have fun and would have a good season with him,” Anderson said.

Ruybalid often picked up a racket himself, playing in Holdrege, as well as in tennis leagues in Kearney and Grand Island. His drop shot even earned a unique nickname.

“His drop shot was unbelievable as far as playing against him. So we started calling it the ‘Dirty Ruybalid,’” Snell said.

Outside of tennis, Ruybalid’s family was the most important part of his life. Ruybalid and his wife of 34 years, Karla, had two children, Nicole Eschliman and Kyle Ruybalid, and three grandchildren, Cali, Turner and Samson Eschliman.

“His three grandkids, they were the highlight of his life,” Kyle said.

Students described the tennis teams as being like a family, something Ruybalid always encouraged.

“He wanted everyone on the team to get along. If there were conflicts, he kind of addressed that because he knew it was more important to be friends than just care about winning and stuff like that,” said Anderson.

The boys’ tennis season wrapped up in October, and the girls will begin at the end of February. Ruybalid will definitely be on their minds the next time they pick up a racket, Drews said.

Holdrege High School has yet to make a decision as to who will take over Ruybalid’s head coaching position.

“There will be times where there is a lot of sadness and they will be missing him, but I’m going to say well over half the time it’s going to be smiles thinking about all he did,” Drews said.
