In a couple early-season games, the Indiana State women’s basketball team has been sloppy and unfocused in the early minutes.
That was definitely not the case Tuesday night in Hulman Center, albeit against a Division II opponent. The Sycamores improved to 2-4 with a 84-51 victory against Missouri S&T.
Tierra Webb was Indiana State’s catalyst at the offensive end from the opening tip, connecting on six of seven shots for 12 points in the game’s first 12 minutes. She finished with a team-high 16 points in a team-high 21 minutes as ISU got contributions from 12 different players.
Webb got a pair of driving buckets in the second quarter that coincided with the Sycamores showing their dominance at the defensive end. The Sycamores scored 14 unanswered points spanning a majority of the second quarter with Ashley Taia posting five for ISU during the run.
“I just saw a lot of open lanes. My teammates passed me the ball and I took what I could get,” Webb said.
“It was a good win. We needed it coming off a loss and now we just gotta keep it going.”
Webb said she saw a lot of positives from the game in which the Sycamores where shooting 53 percent overall and 40 percent from 3-point range midway through the third quarter.
“The way we moved the ball, the way we finished the game, the way we knocked down shots. We could have been more aggressive on defense,” Webb said.
Going back to freshman Ty Battle’s 3-pointer in the final seconds of the first quarter and Kierra Isaiah’s bucket prior to that, ISU outscored Missouri S&T 31-4 to close the first half and take a 51-20 lead at the break.
The Sycamores were solid from the opening tip. ISU answered a 3-pointer by Maddie Raley with an 8-0 run as Ashli O’Neal scored the first four and Webb the next four. Two of the four shots came as a direct result of O’Neal getting in the passing lane for steals.
ISU, averaging nine steals a game, finished the game with 19 steals. Isaiah, a first-year junior college transfer, had a career-best seven of those.
“Coach has been getting on me a lot about being more aggressive and getting up on the defender. It’s important for me to be a valuable player on defense because I’m long and athletic. We need that more aggressive player coming off the bench,” Isaiah said.
If you take away normal starter Ashley Taia’s production, the Sycamores got 40 points from their bench.
ISU fans got a glimpse of the future for most of the fourth quarter as freshmen and sophomores played the bulk of the minutes along with senior Freja Christensen. Isaiah had most of her 10 prior to the fourth quarter, but her 3-pointer stretched the lead to its largest point at 65-30.
Battle had 11 of her 15 in the fourth quarter, scoring nine in a row for the Sycamores at one point including her second 3-pointer of the night.
“I thought they did a great job. We started a little rough, I had to call that timeout there about six minutes or so [on the clock] and try to get into them a little bit. We’re not worried about the score right now, we’re worried about getting better. They responded and did a great job moving the basketball,” Wells said. “Ty Battle is really starting to separate herself a little bit. She played the three through the five tonight.”
The Sycamores have a day off prior to visiting the University of Illinois-Chicago on Thursday so a night like this was a nice lift on their home court.
“We needed this game for a couple different reasons. The timing of it was perfect,” Wells said. “We had a little letdown in the first and a little letdown in the third. If we can keep the momentum going of shooting the ball well, we’ve got a couple games down the stretch here where we feel like can put a couple wins together.”
